Dear Deans, Directors, and Department Heads:
I just want to write a quick note to say thank you to all of you who support the Cultural Translation Project. I greatly enjoyed speaking to the group on October 12 and meeting many of the faculty and students involved in the project. I though the level of discussion was very high, and the topic could not have been more timely. You have great vision in establishing the Cultural Translation Project at this time. While translation studies is booming internationally, the United States has been slow to integrate translation training with translation research. But as the Oct. 12 event indicated, translation studies is becoming of increasing interest to scholars in cultural studies, business, economics, literary theory, psychology, anthropology, and any number of ethnic minority studies programs. You have picked a wonderful writer, scholar, and theorist in Toma Longinovic to head the program. He and I go back many years to our time together at the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa. I am absolutely loyal and promise to help in way I can to support the program. I attach a file to indicate some of the recent activities at the Translation Center at UMass Amherst. Perhaps it will help stimulate discussion for future plans for the Cultural Translation Project. Please feel free to call or email at any time if you have any questions.
