Applicants to the PhD or MA programs must apply both to the UW-Madison Graduate School and to the Slavic Department, and acceptance is contingent on admission by both. Please see the information and instructions below.
1) UW-Madison Graduate School Admissions
Send the following items to the Graduate School:
- Application form (must be completed online at https://www.gradsch.wisc.edu/eapp/eapp.pl)
- Application fee (Mail to: Graduate School Admissions, 228 Bascom Hall, Madison, WI 53706)
- Official GRE and TOEFL scores must be sent by ETS directly to the Graduate School
- Three letters of recommendation. Applicants must use the
following online system for letters of recommendation:

2) Graduate Study at the UW-Madison Slavic Department
- Official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions attended. *International academic records must be in the original language accompanied by an official English translation.* Documents must be issued by the school with the official seal/stamp and an official signature.
- Statement of purpose
- Writing sample (preferably in English about literature) of 15-25 pp. in length
Applications for admission to the graduate program in Russian literature can be received at any time, but only complete applications received by January 2 will be considered for fellowships for the following fall semester.
